Keyword Research for Service Businesses: Find What Customers Actually Search

Here is the uncomfortable truth behind most underperforming service business websites: they are optimised for the words the owner uses, not the words customers type. You say "conveyancing solutions". Your customer types "how much does a conveyancer cost sydney". That gap is where enquiries go missing, and keyword research is simply the discipline of closing it.

You do not need enterprise software to do this well. You need a method, a spreadsheet, and a few hours. Here is the process we use when starting SEO work for service businesses.

Step 1: Start with intent, not volume

Every search carries an intent, and for a service business only some intents pay the bills. Sort candidate keywords into three buckets:

Most businesses over-invest in one high-volume head term and ignore dozens of buying-intent phrases that are individually small but collectively decisive.

Step 2: Mine the sources you already have

Before any tool, list what real customers say. Enquiry form messages, email threads, the questions you answer on the phone every week. The phrasing customers use in those moments is the phrasing they search with. Your Google Business Profile insights and Search Console queries, if the site has any history, show the exact terms already surfacing your business.

Step 3: Expand with free tools

Three free sources get you most of the way:

  1. Google autocomplete and "People also ask". Type your service plus a space and harvest the suggestions; each one is a real, common search. The "People also ask" boxes are a ready-made list of research-intent content topics.
  2. Google Keyword Planner. Built for ads but free with a Google Ads account, and good enough for relative volume: which variants are bigger, not exact counts.
  3. Competitor pages. Search your own buying-intent terms and study who ranks. Their page titles and headings tell you which phrasings Google already associates with the service.

Step 4: Add the local layer

For a Sydney service business the local modifier is where the commercial action is. "web designer" is a global fight; "web designer sydney" is a local one; "web design north shore" is a street fight you can actually win. Map your genuine service areas and pair each with your core services. Suburb-level phrases have small individual volumes, but they convert at multiples of generic terms because the searcher is qualifying themselves for you. We go deep on this in our local SEO guide for Sydney businesses.

Step 5: Map keywords to pages, one intent per page

The output of research is not a list, it is a site plan. Each buying-intent cluster deserves its own page: one service in one area per page, with a title, heading, and copy that match the search. Research-intent questions become articles like this one, which build authority and catch customers a step earlier. Trying to make one page rank for everything is the most common structural mistake we see, and it is also why AI search engines struggle to cite generalist pages, a shift we cover in our guide to answer engine optimisation.

A worked example

A physiotherapy clinic in Chatswood might end up with: service pages for "physio chatswood", "sports physio chatswood", and "clinical pilates chatswood"; articles answering "physio or chiro for lower back pain" and "how many physio sessions do I need"; and a Google Business Profile aligned to the same terms. Perhaps eight pages, each with one job. That focused structure routinely outperforms a fifty-page site with no plan.

Keyword research is not a one-off task; revisit it a couple of times a year as your services and the search landscape shift. And if you want to see how your current site maps against what people actually search, our free AI Site Audit is a fast first look, or talk to us about a full keyword and content plan.
